Six extinctions in Six Minutes

Image
The word 'extinction' is quite synonymous with dinosaurs, woolly mammoths, sabretooth (pretty much everything Ice Age has taught us so far). But, paleontologists believe that 99.99% of species that have dwelled on the planet Earth have faced extinction. Its not that humans are that rare 0.01% that have survived, it's probably just a matter of time, before we, too, become part of someone else's history books.

But before we head there, here is an episode of Shelf Life, a web series from American Museum of Natural History,  titled Six Extinctions in Six Minutes, where you get to see the what has gone extinct from the planet and what has managed to resurrect itself. Don't worry, it's n
ot something we should be afraid of but there is also something thought provoking.

Harvesting dinosaurs from Ghost Ranch [Video]

Tyrannosaurus rex, Palais de la Découverte, Paris (Photo credit: Wikipedia) Once in a while, we come across a news story of paleontologists finding a dinosaurfossil in some part of the world. The significance of the fossil is then explained and the news story is buried into the depths of our mind to be excavated out the next time, there is a similar news story.

But there is a lot more than happens between discoveries, which is left out of the story but if you would like to witness it, you could simply visit, the Ghost Ranch in New Mexico, a hot bed for finding dinosaur fossils.

In this episode of the Shelf Life, you can see how dinosaur fossils are excavated and prepared to be brought back to the American Natural History Museum to be added to their vast collection and studied some day.

Excavations in Ghost Ranch began in the year 1928 and continue to this day.

Biggest Display in a Museum [Video]

Image
Take a moment and try to remember your last visit to the museum and try to fish out the unique memory of the largest real object on display......

Do you have it already? If not take a little more time and try to at least remember a short list of items that were on display. Did the display have a longsword, or a long rifle, probably a chariot,  or even a stuffed elephant. For those, who have seen dinosaur skeletons, you are well aware that they are replicas and not the real skeleton.
So, coming our question about the largest real object that you have seen. Only if you have been a visitor to the American Museum of Natural History in New York would you reply, the Giant Squid. Measuring up to 30 feet in length, the Giant Squid is one of the biggest displays at the AMNH and is a display you simply cannot miss (pun intended).
And the visit gets even sweeter, when you know the story behind the display. If you would like to know about the Giant Squid at AMNH, simply watch this video below ab…

This video from AMNH tells us more about the tiny creatures from the sea floor!
